Delight as €125,000 allocated for footpath on dangerous Milford road

A safety boost is on the way for the Milford community as €125,000 has been allocated for the construction of a footpath along the stretch of road from Mulroy Woods Hotel to Lidl.

In recent years, the roadside has been worn thin by people walking from their accommodation to the town’s retail park.

Funding for the new path will come from the Community Recognition Fund, which supports towns and villages that have welcomed significant numbers of new arrivals of people fleeing conflict, particularly from Ukraine. In total, €1,305,917 has been allocated to 17 Donegal projects.

Cllr. Declan Meehan, who has been advocating for this project, welcomed the announcement, describing it as a “vital investment in community safety and wellbeing.”

“This has been a long time coming, and I’m absolutely delighted to see this allocation secured. The road between Mulroy Woods and Lidl is notoriously dangerous for pedestrians – it’s something I and many residents have raised time and again. This funding will now allow Donegal County Council to move forward with construction and make this route safe for everyone who uses it,” said Cllr. Meehan.

“This isn’t just about infrastructure,” he added. “It’s about making our town more inclusive and accessible. Whether it’s parents with prams, older residents out for a walk, or young people heading to work or school, they all deserve to travel safely on foot. This project is a win for everyone in Milford.”

Cllr. Meehan also acknowledged the strong community voice behind the project, noting the role that local engagement played in bringing the issue to the forefront.

“The people of Milford made their concerns known, and it’s their persistence that helped push this forward. I want to thank the countless people who raised this with me, and who brought this directly to the Council for their attention. Your voices were heard.”

The project is currently out for public consultation and further information is available at: https://consult.donegal.ie/en/consultation/part-8-mulroy-woods-lidl-footpath?src=mawebsite
