RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta’s Barrscéalta, broadcast from na Doirí Beaga, and presented by Michelle Nic Grianna received a Celtic Media Festival 2025 Torc Award for Excellence in the Entertainment Sound category last night.

Dónall Mac Ruairí, who previously produced this programme, accepted the award on behalf of the team at the ceremony in Newquay, Wales, last night. The programme’s current producer is Conor Ó Gallachóir.

The Torc Awards for Excellence are presented annually at the Celtic Media Festival, and celebrate the breadth of talent in the film, tv, radio and digital media industries in minority languages from the Celtic nations and regions as well as English, French, Spanish and Galician.

Barrscéalta covers diverse topics of interest to Donegal people at home and abroad, as well as stories from the six counties, Cavan and Monaghan. Michelle has previously been awarded the Radio Presenter of the Year accolade twice at the Celtic Media Festival, most recently in 2022 and RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta won Station of the Year in 2023.

Barrscéalta’s entry this year recognised the efforts made by the programme to visit its listeners in person in their community as often as possible, on the mainland or traveling offshore to be with them on their island homes. On the 16th and 17th of May 2024, two days were spent among young and old on Oileán Árainn Mhór, Donegal. The first show discussed the joy, the memories and the hardships of island living. On the second day, the show highlighted the excitement and joy, in both song and music, the islanders and its guests would enjoy during the annual Róise Rua Festival.

RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta are nominated for three more awards at the Celtic Media Festival today, Thursday, in the following categories: Caitlín Ní Chualáin for her archive and traditional music programme, Seoda Foinn in Music Programme (Sound), Fachtna Ó Drisceoil, presenter of current affairs programme Tús Áite is nominated for Presenter of the Year, and Raidió na Gaeltachta is nominated for Radio Station of the Year (Sound).
