Carndonagh protest voices anger over inaction on Gaza crisis

Members of the Inishowen Palestine Solidarity Campaign staged a vocal protest in Carndonagh on Friday to draw attention to the starvation of Gaza and the government’s inaction on the Irish Central Bank facilitating Israel’s war bonds.

The protest included three women, Nina Quigley, Christine McGillan and Michaela O’Hara, who did a 72-hour fast in protest for the people of Palestine.

The campaign group based their demonstration around the town’s Diamond and at the doors of Minister of State Charlie McConalogue’s office.

They also staged a “one-minute die-in”, where they lay on the ground symbolising the thousands of people who have been killed in the conflict.

They said: “We are appalled at Charlie McConalogue and the Fianna Fail Party all voting to block the proposed Bill to stop the Central Bank from facilitating Israeli bonds, that are used to fund their military operations, many of which are war crimes. As his constituents, we are holding him to account.”

The demands of the Inishowen IPSG ask that the Government severely sanction Israel, stressing that words alone are insufficient. They also seek the full enactment of the Occupied Territories Bill before summer as well as a halt on permission for the US military to use Shannon Airport.

They said: “We will never be silent when it comes to speaking up for Palestinians’ right to peace, justice and freedom, and speaking out against Irish, and EU complicity in the genocide.”
