Donegal County Council has been urged to seek funding for more safety measures at two busy junctions in Letterkenny.
The ‘Hideout’ junction in Oldtown and the Lismonaghan junction have seen a rise in traffic with the growing number of homes in the area and extra traffic from the Four Lane.
Councillor Donal ‘Mandy’ Kelly has called for a yellow box at each junction, a right turning lane, traffic calming measures, as well as a pedestrian footpath linking both junctions into the Oldtown Bridge.

“The Lismonghan junction is becoming a real issue for residents, who feel they are taking their own life in their hands with the speed of cars coming from Oldtown,” Cllr Kelly told this week’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
Cllr Kelly said the issue is affecting postal workers and one resident has become very annoyed at the current situation.
“When upgrades took place a number of years ago, he gave the council part of his land, and now he’s left in limbo trying to get in and out of his own gate,” Cllr Kelly said.
The council responded to confirm that a safety assessment is being carried out to consider possible options such as improvement in road markings, introductions of traffic signals, one way systems, removal of parking that would improve both pedestrian and traffic safety in the area.
Cllr Kelly was told that if a scheme can be identified, sources of funding will be sought.
Cllr Kelly has asked the roads section to push for the funding and to consider, in the short term, adding yellow boxes as well as a raised table at the Lismonaghan junction.
