Donegal County Council has been asked to provide metered electricity points in casual trading locations in town and village centres across the Letterkenny-Milford area.
The call came from Councillor Declan Meehan this week, who said the facilities would help traders reduce or eliminate the need for fossil fuel generators.
“Who can imagine our villages and towns without the bustle and buzz that these traders bring?#8221; Cllr Meehan said during a motion raised at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.
“Whether it’s the fish man, or the vegetable market or the coffee vans, all of these are integral parts of our community.”
Donegal County Council said its planning authority is currently undertaking a review of casual trading byelaws and intends to consider the introduction of standards, including noise limits, pertaining to the operation of generators on any designated casual trading pitch. Cllr Meehan was told there is no current funding stream for metered electricity points.
In response, the Milford councillor urged the local authority to make efforts to tie in electricity points with ongoing and future streetscape and rural regeneration projects.
“The benefits are obvious, and the intervention and cost would be minimal,” he said.
