Twin Towns main streets may not be resurfaced until 2027

The main street through the Twin Towns may not be resurfaced until sometime in 2027.

The road through Ballybofey and Stranorlar is currently in a poor state, with potholes appearing in a number of areas, including on Stranorlar Bridge (main pic).

Frustrated with a lack of information, a local businessman contacted Donegal County Council directly and was informed the work might not be carried out this year or next.

The Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) pavement programme for the Twin Towns was due to commence works in 2025/6. However, it has been cut back due to an overall national funding decrease and it is now expected that a pavement overlay will not happen until at least 2026, and probably 2027.

The council did not respond to our query on the issue.

However, a spokesperson for TII said plans to resurface the main streets of Ballybofey and Stranorlar are dependent on funding from TII’s national maintenance allocations.

“National funding is limited, but TII anticipates that Donegal County Council will be requesting funding for this resurfacing project in the 2026 allocations,” they said.

“Until funding is available, TII and Donegal County Council cannot offer a start date for this project.”
