Raphoe Town 5-1 Deele Harps
Raphoe Ladies hosted neighbours Deele Harps last night in their first outing of the 11-a-side league. Two hard working teams with some great play on display. The home side started well and went two up through Sarah Parke early on. Deele’s Rebecca McColgan pulled one back on a counter attack as the Raphoe midfield were so high up, Rebecca took a chance and sent one in on top of the keeper. Kelsey was unlucky not to get full control of it. The girls responded well though and went straight back up to net a third when Lauren O Donnell played a lovely cross to the back post met by young Michaela O’Regan Hannifan who slotted home. The second half the girls continued to push on with the Deele goal keeper Louise Sharkey in good form denying them time after time. Eventually Rachel Lawne went running through 1v1 and shot low to bottom right hand corner and Amiee Lafferty finished the game out lobbing the keeper in the dying minutes of the game to round the night off. Well done to both teams on an entertaining game of football.
Fanad United 2-2 Bonagee United
Persistent rain failed to dampen spirits at Traigh-a-Loch on Monday evening as Fanad United Ladies and Bonagee United Ladies played out a thrilling 2-2 draw in challenging conditions. The match, played under constant rain, lived up to expectations following the sides’ previous closely contested meetings in this season’s Winter League. From the opening whistle, both teams showed attacking intent, resulting in an engaging and physical contest. It was the hosts who struck first, with Clodagh Heron opening the scoring in the 8th minute. A well-placed cross from Hannah found Heron in a dangerous position and she displayed fine technique to chip the advancing goalkeeper and give Fanad the early advantage. Bonagee responded with a spell of sustained pressure midway through the first half. Their equaliser came following a well worked passage of play, beginning from their defence and progressing through midfield with a series of crisp passes. The move culminated in Claire Doherty finding space on the edge of the area and slotting home a low drive to make it 1-1. Fanad goalkeeper Mary-Bridget McGeever was called into action on several occasions before the break, producing a number of vital saves to keep the scores level at half-time. The second half began with renewed determination from the home side, and they were rewarded just two minutes after the restart. Hannah Sheils, who was influential throughout, broke down the wing and delivered a dangerous cross into the box. Shannon McBride showed excellent control to bring the ball down before setting up Teresa, whose first-time volley flew into the net to restore Fanad’s lead. Despite dominating large portions of the second half, Fanad were unable to extend their advantage. With Michelle, Maggie, Marie and Eibhlin working hard defensively keeping Bonagee out as the clock ticked down, Bonagee’s pressure paid dividends. A miscleared ball fell to Claire Doherty, who struck a superb effort into the top corner to seal her brace and earn Bonagee a valuable point. Both sides deserve credit for producing a high-quality match in torrential conditions. The game was well managed by referee Eamon Sheridan, who kept a firm but fair handle on proceedings. Fanad United Ladies are on the road next week as they travel to face Deele in their next league outing.
