Progress Pride Flag to fly at Letterkenny council offices

An updated edition of the Pride flag will be flown at the Letterkenny Public Services Centre during this year’s Letterkenny Pride festival.

The Progress flag will be raised at the council offices from August 14th-17th 2025.

This flag, which features the original Pride rainbow, also represents marginalised people of colour in the LGBTQ+ community, as well as the trans and intersex community.

A motion to fly the flag was raised by Cllr Declan Meehan at Tuesday’s meeting of the Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District.

Cllr stated that the passing of the motion is a symbol of Donegal County Council joining in the support for Letterkenny Pride.

“Over the past 10 years there’s been an explosion of regional prides, that is very welcome, it gives visibility and celebrates diversity in our communities,” said Cllr Meehan.

“Donegal has also thankfully experienced this growth of events in Letterkenny, Falcarragh, Buncrana and Bundoran.”

Cllr Meehan says that Pride events “let our young people know to be okay with who they are, where they are, particularly when we are seeking an increase in hate crimes motivated by homophobia and transphobia around the world.”

Donegal County Council raised the Pride flag for the first time in 2022 at both Lifford County House and Letterkenny Public Services Centre.

Cllr Meehan said: “I think it’s extremely important for all sections of society to get involved in Pride.

“This is now the third year of Letterkenny Pride and we have seen the town of Letterkenny, various organisations, companies, and businesses rowing in behind the committee that do such excellent work there to bring one of these very fun and positive events to the streets of Letterkenny. So I think that Donegal County Council should be behind that as well.”

Cllr Meehan said it is important that the Progress flag is flown, as an even greater symbol of inclusion.

“This flag has gone through a number of iterations over the years since the Stonewall Riots in the 60s,” he said.

“This most recent one is the most inclusive version of that. It covers all parts of the LGBTQ+ community, including the trans community, including people of colour, and it’s making sure that that flag is up to date and is as inclusive as possible for people so that people see themselves represented in it.”

World-famous singer Moya Brennan and Mickey Joe Harte are among the top local talents confirmed for events during this year’s Letterkenny Pride festival. The main event is the parade, which will take place on Main Street on Saturday 16th August.
