Parents across Co Donegal are reminded to ensure that their children get the school vaccination booster to protect their children against potentially serious infections before the summer.

The vaccine a child receives in school will depend on their age.

The school booster vaccines include Diphtheria Tetanus, Whooping cough, Polio, Measles, Mumps and Rubella. The Tetanus vaccine will prevent infection if a child gets a cut while at sports or at a summer camp.

The MMR vaccine will prevent measles, mumps and rubella. And the outbreak of Measles in Galway is a timely reminder that all children need two doses of the MMR vaccine for full protection.

Dr Anthony Breslin, Specialist in Public Health in the North West said, “With European Immunisation week starting on 22 April the HSE is reminding parents to review their child’s immunisation record and if there are any vaccine missing get the child immunised at school or at their GP. Vaccines are safe and effective.”

In addition, the website of the National Immunisation Office, www.immunisation.ie is a very useful online resource with accurate and timely information on all immunisation issues in Ireland.
