Specsavers audiologists are today marking World Hearing Day by celebrating a €25,000 donation made to The National Hearing Implant and Viani Research Centre at Beaumont Hospital.

Specsavers, which has hearing centres in Letterkenny and Donegal Town, reached their fundraising target after hosting events throughout the year such as in-store competitions, bake sales and family fun days to raise funds for Beaumont Hospital.

Specsavers Audiologists ambassador and rugby legend Rory Best joined Audiologists to present €25,000 to their charity partner ahead of World Hearing Day on 3rd March.

Rory visited Beaumont to see, first-hand, the incredible work of the staff at the centre.

‘It is so rewarding to see how the funds Specsavers Audiologists have raised over the past year have benefited The National Hearing Implant and Viani Research Centre and the services they provide to their deserving patients,’ he says.

Specsavers has pledged to raise further funds for the charity this coming year.

Orla Walsh, Specsavers audiology director, adds: ‘Our customers are so important to us, often working with them and their families for years as we go through their individual hearing journeys. We are so thankful to be able to help most people however unfortunately we do meet families where we can’t help,’ she says. ‘Some of our cases are too advanced for hearing aids to be of benefit so to be able to refer patients to a hospital that we work with is so rewarding.’

‘The National Hearing Implant and Viani Research Centre at Beaumont Hospital is the only facility in the Republic of Ireland that offers cochlear implantation to adults and children with profound hearing loss, who cannot be fitted with hearing aids. To be able to help people in their hearing journeys even when we can’t in store is a privilege. We look forward to seeing this partnership grow from strength to strength in 2020.’

Peter Walshe, Consultant ENT Surgeon at Beaumont Hospital, says: ‘With Specsavers Audiologists’ fundraising and support we look forward to being in a position to improve care for our patients and help to restore hearing to many patients in years to come. We have been able to improve the day to day running of the department and the level of patient care with the generosity of Specsavers fundraising.’
