A NUMBER of the county’s Credit Unions are putting staff on full-time debt collection duties as the number of people failing to meet loans increases.
Yesterday at Letterkenny District Court a number of cases were heard where agreements were reached to re-pay debts – with repayments in one case set at €50 per month.
One of the county’s biggest Credit Unions – in Buncrana – has now put two of its eight staff on full-time credit control checks to keep up with the number of people defaulting on loans.
Meanwhile one source told donegaldaily.com that a small number of people in several parts of the county are “using” the downturn not to pay back loans.
“Many people are in difficulty but there is a handful of people who have flash cars and fancy holidays who are trying to use the downturn as an excuse not to re-pay loans,” said one insider.
