JIM McGUINNESS has declared hip surgery on Karl Lacey a success but says he won’t rush the 2012 Player of the Year back into the Donegal squad.
The Four Masters All-Star also missed the trip to Dubai because of exams and recovery from the surgery.
And it may the Ulster Championship opener against Tyrone before he comes back into the panel.
“It will take a wee while. He had three or four jobs done when they went in there to do the work,” said Jim.
“He had a problem with a bit of bone growing on the ball socket joint, and then they shaved the cartilage when they were in there and there was floating bone and stuff like that.
“Karl is a very important player to us but he is also a player who picks up a lot of heavy knocks in games. Whether they are purposeful or not, I don’t know, but he does get a lot of heavy knocks in games.
“It is disappointing, we have lost him now. We will have to make sure that everything is done very professionally in terms of getting him back because it is very easy to rush players back. We have not done that and we don’t intend to do it with him. He is a young man and we want to make sure that he is perfect when he does come back.”
