HEALTH Minister James Reilly is set to step into the lion’s den – by addressing a nursing union conference at the Mount Errigal Hotel in Letterkenny this Friday.
The Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation begins its conference tomorrow evening (Wednesday) with debates due to begin the next day. More than 350 delegates will be in the Co Donegal town for the event.
INMO General Secretary, Liam Doran said today: “The conference theme of ‘Protecting the Frontline’ aptly sums up the approach of the Organisation, at this time, on behalf of both our members’ terms and conditions, and their ability to provide safe care to patients/clients.
“I have no doubt the conference will see very lively debate on many of the motions where we can expect members to speak, from the heart, on their experiences on the frontline as they call for safe nurse/midwife patient ratios and proper resources in all areas of our health care system.
“Obviously the issue of pay will also dominate the conference as the government continues to threaten to do further harm and attack public servants’ pay for the third time. I have no doubt our delegates will reaffirm this Organisation’s commitment to protect our members very ordinary incomes with, if necessary, collective action with other public sector unions.”
