Fine Gael Minister Joe McHugh TD, has welcomed employment figures for Donegal released this week by the IDA, saying that continued job creation will help with the recovery in Donegal.
“In Donegal there were 2,918 employed in 12 companies supported by the Department of Jobs through the IDA in 2015,” said McHugh
“New figures released by the IDA show that 311 IDA additional new jobs were added to the Donegal economy last year alone, an increase of 12% on the previous year.
“These are high quality jobs, like the positions advertised by Randox which announced it was hiring 450 jobs by the end of 2020, with 125 employees being recruited by the end of 2015. The IDA estimates that for every ten jobs created by foreign direct investment, a further seven are generated in the wider economy.
“Donegal still has a big challenge to improve the unemployment figures across the County. While I am extremely aware that there are still too many people who cannot find work at home, I think it is vitally important to recognise that the numbers are going in the right direction. We need to keep this trend going and I will continue to highlight the many reasons why Donegal could be a hub for businesses. Our Regional Action Plans for Jobs is designed to increase employment in every region by 10-15% between now and 2020.
“In total, 1,071 IDA jobs have been added to the Donegal economy in between 2011 and 2015 under the Fine Gael/ Labour Government, an increase of 53% compared to 2010. By contrast, under the mismanagement of Fianna Fáil, just 79 IDA jobs were created in Donegal in the three short years from 2008- 2010.
“Fine Gael has a long term economic plan that will keep the recovery going in Donegal and ensure a better quality of life for all. Job creation is crucial to this plan because having more people in work creates the resources to invest in better services such as childcare, healthcare and the justice system.
“We must remain focused on the plan to continue creating jobs and keep the recovery going so that everyone can feel the benefit.”
