There is widespread sadness across Donegal tonight following the sad passing of well-known businessman and hotelier Dom Breslin.
Breslin was one of the most respected and revered businessmen in Donegal – and is the former owner of The Abbey Hotel.
Tributes have been pouring in via social media outlets on Facebook and Twitter this evening following the news of his passing.
Breslin owned the hugely popular Dom’s Pier and Pier 1 Restaurant in Donegal Town.
Dom’s Pier 1 posted the following poignant message on their Facebook page, “End of an era as Dom Breslin dies today.
“Donegal Town and county is coming to terms this evening with the very sad and sudden news that Dom Breslin has died after a short illness some hours ago.
“Few people could be described as an icon and a legend but Dom Breslin ticked all the boxes and his passing really is the end of an era.
“The former owner of the Abbey Hotel and current owner of here at Dom’s Pier 1, Dom lived in Drumcliff Tce and was only recently pre deceased by wife Mary, and sister Marian who both died within weeks of one another.”

Former Donegal County Board Chairman, John McConnell was one of those who paid tribute via Facebook.
McConnell wrote, “Very sorry to hear this evening of the death of Dom Breslin of Donegal Town. Dom was a regular fixture of our Sunday night trips to the Abbey Hotel back in the day.
“He was also a great host and couldn’t do enough when Karen and I got married there in 1996.
“Not to forget the many late nights I spent there during my County Board days with meetings sometimes hitting the 3am mark.
“He was a brilliant hands on businessman and a very likeable man. Deepest sympathy to Michael and the rest of his family especially so soon after their mothers death. R.I.P Dom.”
Sean Perry posted the following, “Sorry to hear that one of the true stalwarts of the Donegal hospitality sector has gone to his eternal reward. RIP Dom Breslin, Donegal Town.”
