A young Carndonagh woman is creating ripples in New York.
Kerry Stamp from Bridge Street in the Inishowen town, is one of the students from Ulster University Choir chosen to perform at the world famous Carnegie Hall in New York.
“It’s so exciting and an honour to be picked for this trip. Most singers dream would be to sing on stage in Carnegie Hall so for this dream to become a reality.”
This six day trip is in conjunction with royal composer Paul Mealeor, who composed music for Prince Charles and Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Prince William and Catherine Duchess of Cambridge.
Kerry is no stranger to singing on big occasions. At eight years of age she performed for President Mary McAleese in Dublin as part of the Royal Irish Academy of Music High Achievers Awards.
She also sang for former American President Bill Clinton when he visited Derry two years ago. Another highlight was going to London with the University and singing at the Royal Albert Hall for renkowned BBC special ‘Night at the Proms.’ Kerry has also performed at Stormont Parliament Building.
Kerry began singing at three years of age when she went to Vera Butler’s singing lessons in the Colgan Hall.
Kerry says Vera was instrumental in nurturing her singing career.
“Vera Butler without doubt has been a massive influence in my life. She gave me a love for music and singing and was totally dedicated to getting the most from you.”
Kerry also won numerous Féis competitions in Derry, Carndonagh and Moville. She has also taken part in many concerts and has sang at several local weddings. However Carnegie Hall must certainly be seen as the pinnacle so far.
As well as performing at Carnegie Hall the choir are also performing at the Irish Embassy in New York.
