Calls have been made to carry out drains in housing estates in order to prevent flooding over the winter months.
Sinn Féin Councillor Gerry McMonagle told a meeting of the Letterkenny Municipal District that drains have become blocked with leaves, dirt and other debris after recent heavy rainfall.
“If the Council staff is under pressure, resident groups are willing to help out,” Councillor McMonagle said.
“They have gone to open the gratings in some places and didn’t have the proper tools, but the groups are willing.
“We need to make sure that drains are cleared to make sure that we have no localised flooding. We don’t want the drains filling up with leaves and dirt.
“Residents in Hawthorn Heights, for instance, have been onto me.”
Councillor Adrian Glackin backed those comments.
He said: “It is very important that we’re proactive rather than reactive on this issue.”
Councillor McMonagle was told that this work is ongoing and a breakdown will be given at a forthcoming workshop.
