Viewers were left in stitches this week as a particularly Irish swear word appeared on the Countdown board.
After Rachel Riley arranged the letters HGTOIBYES on the board, Susie Dent came up with the 8-letter word Gobshite.
“Are you allowed to say that?” asked Nick Hewer, with Susie replying “Well, it’s vulgar slang so you have to be careful, but it’s a stupid, foolish, or incompetent person.”
Oxford English Dictionary’s example of the word in a sentence is: “He’d have looked like a right gobshite bringing the lawnmower for a walk around a baldy garden.”
So glad I am working at home today and this pops up in the background! 😂😂 where’s Father Jack?#gobshite #countdown pic.twitter.com/JLsfhcDb3h
