Met Eireann has issued a Status Orange warning for 13 Irish counties tomorrow as Storm Ali approaches.
The first named storm of the season is set to arrive overnight on Wednesday and lash parts of the country with strong wind gusts between 110 and 120 km/h.
The worst affected counties will be on the Atlantic coast at first from 5am on Wednesday until 1pm the following afternoon.
Forecasters are warning of gale-force winds and ‘severe and damaging gusts’ at times. Heavy outbreaks of rain will accompany the stormy conditions in the early morning.
A Status Orange warning is a step up from Yellow as it warns the public to ‘Be Prepared’ for extreme weather.
The warning affects Donegal, Cavan, Monaghan, Dublin, Kildare, Louth, Meath, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Sligo, Clare and Kerry.
All other counties in Ireland are under a nationwide Yellow warning up to 5pm on Wednesday.
The warning from Met Eireann said: “Storm Ali will track close to the west and northwest coast from the early hours of Wednesday morning until late afternoon.
“South to southwest winds veering westerly will increase to mean speeds between 65 and 80 km/h with gusts between 110 and 120 km/h for a time in some areas.
“Winds strongest along Atlantic Coasts at first and later in the morning extending further east.”
