The Mayor of Donegal Cllr Cora Harvey has launched a new fundraising and get fit initiative at Glenveagh, Co Donegal.
Speaking at the event Mayor Harvey said “This event will be known as “Rundonegal Women’s 5k” and all proceeds raised will go towards 2 Charities designated each year by the Mayor.
“I am launching this initiative this year and it is hoped that the incoming Mayor whoever he or she may be will continue to drive the event with the support of Donegal County Council and Athletics groups in the County.”
This year Mayor Harvey announced that the proceeds will go towards two charities – Diabetes Federation of Ireland, Donegal Branch and Strengthening Families Programme Donegal.
Currently The Donegal Branch of the Diabetes Federation is fundraising to contribute towards research in to the cure and treatment of type 1 Diabetes.
Huge advancements have been made in this area of medicine and the Diabetes Federation of Ireland have partnered with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to promote and help fund type 1 diabetes research in Ireland. For more information on this please go to www.diabetes.ie
The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) is a National and International family skills based intervention program that works directly with families in distress.
The program has shown to have a positive impact on family relationships, enhancing parenting skills and learning effective communication skills. We are fortunate that the program is available in Donegal. For more information on this please go to www.sfp.com.
Irelands Senior Athletics Team Manager Patsy Mc Gonagle, who has supported the Mayor in organising the event, has said everyone should try and get involved.
“ This will be a fun event aimed at all levels, encouraging women / girls to get out, get fit and enjoy the company of other women”.
Patsy also outlined the importance of sport and leisure for physical and mental well being and is encouraging as many women as possible to partake whether its to run/jog/walk .
The date and time is 15th May 2011 at 11am, the excellent venue is Glenveagh National Park, also a willing partner. It is hoped to attract additional support partners in the weeks ahead.
