Senator Brian Ó Domhnaill, Fianna Fail Seanad Spokesperson on Agriculture, Food & Marine, has this week confirmed that Bord Iascaigh Mhara are seeking applications from the seafood processing sector under the Sectors Business Investment Scheme.

Senator Ó Domhnaill said: “The aim of this scheme is to provide support to the seafood processors to help promote and develop the sector. The grants available are set at a maximum rate of 25% of eligible capital cost.

“Small and medium enterprises in engaged in seafood processing have just over two weeks to apply for grant aid. Applications must be submitted to An Bord Iascaigh Mhara before 5 pm on Friday, 12th August, 2011.

“The Irish seafood sector currently has an annual estimated sales value of €700 million and employs 11,000 people, mostly in peripheral coastal communities. There are great opportunities within the sector to add value to wild landings and aquaculture products. This is clearly outlined in the Food Harvest 2020 report.

“The industry must continue to receive strong State support to encourage growth and job creation. I strongly encourage any processors planning to expand or develop to apply for support through this grant scheme,” concluded Senator Ó Domhnaill.
