People suffering from Multiple Sclerosis in Co Donegal are to be given Vitamin D as experts investigate a possible link between the illness and the lack of sunshine.
Researchers including Ryan Tubridy’s brother have found that MS is less prevalent in places like Co Wexford where there is a higher annual rate of sunshine.
And they think the high incidence of the illness in Co Donegal is because people here aren’t getting enough sun.
Consultant neurologist Dr Chris McGuigan, who works in St Vincent’s Hospital in Dublin, said the new study will start in December.
It will be carried out to see if vitamin D supplementation can stop the next “event” or seizure.
“There have been international studies which suggest a role for it in MS. Low vitamin D is implicated in other auto-immune conditions,” he said.
“There have been huge advances, but I suspect in the next five years that the landscape of treatment is going to change again for the better,” he added.
