IRELAND’S most northerly mountain bike race has been cancelled after cattle broke into the track and wrecked it.
Competitors were due to arrive in Malin this Sunday from all over Ireland for the Northman Race, organised by the Donegal Mountain Biking Club.
Spokesman Findhan Strain said he was heartbroken the event – a massive tourism boost for Inishowen – had to be called off.
“Unfortunately, a herd of up to 50 cattle broke onto the ground on Monday and have completely destroyed the track,” he told Donegal Daily.
“The problem was discovered on Wednesday and we have done everything possible to try and rectify the situation, with great assistance from local farmers who have been brilliant.
“We have had diggers, delivery of stones and everything but there is simply too much work to do before Sunday to turn the track into anything other than a muckfest.”
Findhan went on: “The Club’s policy of running enjoyable and unique races would not be fulfilled with the damage that has been done to the track. There is more than six inches of mud in places that with forecasted rain over the weekend could will only get worse. Even the berms have been destroyed.”
He asked for racers to contact him via the club so that they can help – especially those due to travel and who had booked accommodation in the area.
“For those of you who have planned to travel or have booked accommodation, please let us know and we will try and assist you in every way possible,” said the organier.
“We are deeply sorry for any inconvenience caused however, some matters are just beyond our control. We will endeavour to try and make it up to everyone in future races.
“We will organise a club spin for Sunday so please see the forum for details: www.donegalmtb.com.”
