NEW CHARITY SHOP TO HELP KEEP LIFFORD’S VOICE ALIVE

A new charity shop is set to bring new life to the centre of Lifford.

The shop will be based at Lifford/Clonleigh Resource Centre, a ‘not for profit’ Community Development Project, which has been working with and for the local community for the past twenty years.

Almost two years ago, the Centre stopped receiving Government Core Funding under, what was then called, the National Community Development Programme.

This meant that the centre no longer received funding to cover the costs of overheads and core staff, namely a Centre Co-ordinator and Centre Administrator.

The centre has survived the change by becoming more innovative in terms of generating income to cover these essential costs.

As part of the Centre’s overall ‘Sustainability Plan’ the Centre will be opening the ‘BLOSSOMS’ New2U Shop, this Sunday.

Not only will the shop bring in much needed funds it will be a much welcomed resource, providing quality items for sale to the community at very reasonable cost, especially in light of these times of hardship for many people.

The shop would not be feasible without local people’s donations and volunteering their time to work in the shop.

“We have already recruited and trained thirteen volunteers and hopefully will recruit many more” says Anita McGranaghan, Lead Worker on the new initiative.

“We value our volunteers and will ensure that they will be supported in their roles”

The shop will initially open three days per week, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 10am until 4pm, but the aim will be to have it opened Monday – Friday, within a few months. The community have already donated many items and anyone wishing to donate can drop off items at the Resource Centre any time, daily, from 9am until 5pm

Brid Foley, Centre Co-ordinator, emphasised “This is very much a Community Initiative supported by the local Community in relation to local donations and local volunteers working in the Shop. It is imperative that the Centre continues to generate income in order to continue to provide the much needed local resources, services and initiatives for local people, in particular for those people who do not have the same advantages in life as others”
