COUNCILLOR PLEADS WITH NRA TO ADDRESS NOTORIOUS BLACKSPOT AFTER ROAD DEATH

A leading county councillor has demanded the National Roads Authority address a notorious accident blackspot after a young man lost his life.

Cllr Patrick McGowan told Donegal Daily he is outraged the NRA has not upgraded the road network between Stranorlar and Killygordon.

The Twin Towns local representative was speaking after a 26 year old man from Inver died when his car left the road on Christmas night.

Tragic Luke Peeks died at Letterkenny General Hospital after he crashed around 11pm while on the way to see his girlfriend in Castlefin.

Numerous accidents have taken place on the stretch of road close to St Joseph’s Hospital.

In 2009 two Latvian men were killed when their car hit another car close to the scene of the latest tragedy.

Serejus Pridyvus, 31, and Vaidas Aucius, 39, died when their Audi A4 collided with another car on the N15 on November 23rd, 2009.

Cllr McGowan says he has lost count of times the ESB has had to replace poles from motorists striking them on the series of bends.

“I have raised this matter with the National Roads Authority on a number of occasions,” he told Donegal Daily.

“There is not a month that goes by that someone does not go off the road here. By luck most of them have been unhurt or just had minor injuries.

“But we have seen now what can happen. Lives are being put at risk and money needs to be spent to upgrade this road,” he said.

The road was closed for a number of hours yesterday, as Gardai carried out a forensic examination of the area.

Gardai have appealed for any other motorists who may have been in the area at the time and noticed the crash to contact them.

Fr John Joe Duffy of St Mary’s Church in Stranorlar described the incident as a “real tragedy.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the young man and his family. The loss of life in such a sudden fashion is always tragic but on Christmas night, it is even more poignant,” he said.
