DD Exclusive: FAMILIES living beside a wind farm were in shock last night after turbines on a crash site were turned back on – without any consultation.
North West Wind Ltd, whose shareholders include Crolly man John Gillespie, turned on the eight remaining turbines at the Loughderryduff site near Maas last night.
A ninth turbine crashed in 80km/hr winds last Friday – a wind level below the ‘shut down’ limit set by manufacturers Vestas.
The companies have admitted that they still don’t know what caused the accident which sent debris flying over a wide area close to a local road.
Despite this, the remaining eight turbines were back operating last night.
One local resident contacted Donegal Daily and fumed: “We thought the wind turbines would be off until some sort of announcement on the cause of the incident at the weekend was made.
“They don’t know what happened, yet eight other turbines are back on.
“Vestas and North West Wind need to make a public statement.
“It’s not good enough for it to start generating power again and for local people to be left in the dark. In fact it’s outrageous.”
Another woman who lives off the Tullies Road where the incident happened told us: “I drive past that site ten times every day and I am terrified that the one closest to the road will collapse some day and send a rotary blade crashing through my car.
“We want assurances from Vestas that this won’t happen again.
“I lost my breath when I saw the turbines back on again; we are living in fear.”
Meanwhile county councillors who have backed a county development plan with no setback restrictions on future wind farms could not be contacted last night for comment.
