Donegal supporters have taken to Twitter and Facebook to vent their fury at the so-called Donegal supporters who have labelled the team an ’embarrassment’ and have called for Jim McGuinness to step aside following Sunday’s crushing 16 point defeat to Mayo.

The real Donegal supporters are furious with fans they call “Bandwagon fans” who only support the team when things are going well and are usually the first to criticise the players and management when results don’t go in their favour.

Some of these so-called supporters posted on Facebook.

“Well that was embarrassing, it doesn’t get much worse than that, total joke, systems are fine until they meet superior alternatives, we couldn’t adapt to what was happening, we were found out and teams now know how to beat us and beat us easily at that, changes needed now!!,” said one.

“Players don’t care they’ve been partying all year and some speculation that partying has continued throughout the summer. Players looked flat and so did Jim, we couldn’t do anything to stop what was happening, surely one of the worst performances ever from All-Ireland champions, terrible stuff,” said another.

“We’re back to the dark old days of leaving Croke Park with 20 minutes left to play getting hammered, how have we got so bad in such a short space of time, management and players need to take a long hard look at themselves.”

Donegal supporters stunned by these posts that were becoming a recurring feature of content on their Facebook timeline responded.

One wrote: “Some fans didn’t take long to get off the bandwagon, the only embarrassment is the fact they call themselves fans, the boys owe us nothing and they have been unreal for the last 3 years and they expect to get abuse of their own so-called supporters disgrace. This team will be back!!”

Another wrote: “Some fans are a joke, couldn’t wait to get on Facebook and slate these boys that have brought pride to their county, they are all legends and need our support NOW when there hurting after such a defeat, people have short memories and people calling for Jim McGuinness to step away need to be taking away by the men in white coats #lunatics”

Other posts include:

“Donegal will be back, today was a bad day we’ll get over it you don’t win an All-Ireland in the fashion we did and become a bad team overnight, the bandwagon brigade should be ashamed of themselves, THESE BOYS OWE US NOTHING!! Proud to be from Donegal, Jim and the boys will be back next year. #Donegalforsam2014

“Come on guys Jim took us from rock bottom to the summit within two years, the man is a genius and him and this group of players will be back as good as ever next year.”

“Let’s be proud of their achievements over the last 3 years and support them now when they need it most.”
