It may only be March but the Christmas spirit is in full swing in Kilmacrennan with the news that Independent candidate John O’Donnell has secured Christmas lights for the village.
Following feedback from locals attending his community meeting two weeks ago, O’Donnell partnered with businessman Gary Cooney of Gary’s Pet World to secure 2km of lights, thus ensuring that his home town would not spend another festive season in the dark.
To oversee the installation of the lights, O’Donnell is now setting up the ‘Brighter Kilmacrennan’ committee and is inviting local residents to get involved.
The Independent candidate is also keen to develop the committee’s remit to include the general upkeep and improvement of the village.
Making the announcement at his second community meeting in Kilmacrennan Hall, O’Donnell said: “I was inspired to take action after listening to local people talk of their disappointment that our village was one of the only towns in the surrounding area without Christmas lights.
“When I thought about it, I realised that this was actually an easy problem to fix and I’m delighted that after spending several years in the dark, Kilmacrennan will now be lit up for Christmas 2014.
“I look forward to working with the local community on this project and would encourage anyone interested in brightening the place up a little to get involved with the ‘Brighter Kilmacrennan’ committee”.
John O’Donnell is the son of the late Councillor Eddie O’Donnell and his wife Anne, also a former councillor. For more information and campaign updates, visit www.odonnellfordonegal.com
