Old Orchard / Glencar Inn Saturday Promotion / Relegation Play-Off

Glenree United Reserves 2 Mulroy Celtic 1 (a.e.t.)

Saturday Division One status in the Donegal Junior League crossed the Blaney Bridge from Mulroy to Glenree as the local United side defeated the local Celtic side in this end of season encounter at Diamond Park, Ballyare.

As a contest this was a fairly even encounter with little to choose between the teams. Going into the game Mulroy Celtic aimed to protect their Division One status and they took the lead through Paul Martin ten minutes into the second half.

Their lead was short lived however as Karl Mc Elhinney levelled the score ten minutes later. Neither side could find a winning goal and the match went to extra time.

With the additional time almost up and the game looking as if it was going to penalties Mc Elhinney did it again, finding the net with only two minutes remaining.

In their after match summaries both managers felt that Glenree had shaded the game and it was as worthy winners that they gained promotion.

Mulroy manager Shane Friel said that Glenree had a game plan and they stuck to it well before wishing them all the best next season. For his own side he confirmed that it would be an all out effort to try to bounce straight back up next season. John Coll felt that the best team won on the day. He continued that it was a very sporting match and commended the Mulroy team for their play and effort.

He concluded by saying that every man in his side deserved the promotion for their effort throughout the season.

“We were slightly disappointed not to gain automatic promotion but at least we did it today when it mattered and now we have Division One football to look forward to”. Coll fells that Mulroy have the players to come straight back up and wished them well in 2014 /’15.
