Liam Blaney has topped the tally in the Letterkenny/Milford area.
The Rosnakill man has tallied a total of 1,727 votes and looks set to lead three Fianna Fail seats in the area.
Both Ciaran Brogan and James Pat McDaid look safe also.
But it has been a huge first outing for Independent candidate John O’Donnell who has tallied in second place behind Blaney and ahead of Brogan with 1,695 votes.
The Mayor of Donegal Ian McGarvey is also likely to regain his seat with a tally of 1,411 votes.
But Fianna Fail’s plans to have a clean sweep has disappeared with John Watson out of the race with a tally of just 505 votes.
Sinn Fein’s Gerry McMonagle polled well with 1,160 while his running partner Mick Quinn on 1,048 should also be home and dry.
The big battle will be for the last remaining seats between Dessie Shiels, Noel McBride, Jimmy Kavanagh and Donal Cullen.
