Donegal’s Pat The Cope Gallagher said he is still “hopeful” of retaining his seat in Europe.

Pat The Cope is still hopeful of retaining the seat in Europe.

The Fianna Fail stalwart is in a battle for the last seat in the Midlands North West constituency.

Early tallies from Inishowen suggested he was being well-beaten in his home county by Sinn Fein’s Matt Carthy.

But apart from Inishowen, Cope has polled much better in other Donegal constituencies including Letterkenny and Glenties.

Gallagher told Donegal Daily that he is “hopeful” he can retain his MEP status.

He said that people should not read into the high tally of Inishowen is being given to Sinn Fein Matt Carthy as an overall indication of how the vote is going.

“It is very early days yet but I am hopeful judging by RTE’s exit poll which puts me on 11% that I can retain the Fianna Fail seat.

“That would put me ahead of the other Fianna Fail candidate Thomas Byrne. I am not saying I am confident but I am hopeful at this stage,” he said.

Independent Luke Ming Flanagan is polling really well in the tallies and could well take the first seat in the constituency.
