GOLF NEWS: MARY GILLEN WINS THE LADIES CAPTAINS PRIZE AT MURVAGH

Lady Captains Day -Mrs Mary Farragher-12th July

70 ladies competed for the Lady Captains prize on Saturday in spite of the adverse weather conditions, challenging tees and pin positions.

Compliments were showered on Lady Captain Mary for the magnificent presentation table, which had a black & white theme, and had been assembled with the help of Violet from Magee of Donegal. Accolades were also paid to Mary Meehan and Mary McGlynn for the numerous flower arrangements and in particular for the bunker composition in the Ladies locker room which used wild flowers, grasses, sand and beech branches from the course. In her speech Mary complimented the staff, and the volunteers who give of their time to help make Donegal Golf Club the magnificent club it is today.

Mary Gillen, who represents the ladies on the Management Committee, was the popular winner with a super score of 70 net. Clare Paasch, from Germany, who with her family spends her holidays in Donegal was the runner up with 74nett. Last years winner Mary McLaughlin had to be content with 3rd placing this year and Maeve Marnane who plays her golf in Black Bush and Donegal was 4th. A competition was held for the junior girls a few weeks ago and this was won by Sophie Carr who had 19pts for 8 holes with Ella Pearmain in 2nd place with 12pts.

It was a clean sweep by visitors for the Open Day.

Congratulation to the Miele Team captained by Geraldine Gorman who defeated Ballyliffen on the 7th July. 2 matches were won in Ballyliffen. The 3rd match was won in Donegal, with the 4th match called in.

Dorothy Woods, who played on the winning Miele team on the Monday, was the winner of the Britton Insurance sponsored competition with 35pts. Last year’s Lady Captain Jane Brown was runner up with 34pts and in 3rd place was Audrey Johnston on the same score.

Mathew Shovlin has shown a return to form in recent weeks following an enforced layoff earlier in the year. On a day of good scoring, he had two shots to spare over Colum O’Rourke (2nd) and Michael (D) Gallagher (3rd) with Maurice Campbell one shot further back and Bobby O’Shea taking the gross.

Thursday Specials

We have now past the halfway point of the season and the race for player of the year is starting to heat up, Frank O’Donnell is now leading the way having overtaken early pace setter Bob Dore who moved down one spot. The leader board is on display in the Locker Room.

This week’s winner was Matt Shovlin with 34pts, 2nd place went to Mark Butler with 32pts on a break of tie from our treasurer Brian Boyle who was 3rd also 32pts. Our chairman Aiden Cassidy was 4th with 30pts on a break of tie, showing that has recent enforced break from the Thursdays due to work commitments did not have a negative impact on his golf.

Frank O’Donnell had the best 1st 9 with 22pts and not for the first time this year Michael ‘D’ Gallagher was the best past player with 32pts.

Chairman’s day is on Thursday, 31th July.

Presentation Night Friday 18th July. – Mixed Scramble (15 holes) in aid of St Vincent De Paul Society

Presentation of prizes for sponsored competitions takes place on Friday the 18th of July at 9.30pm. A Mixed Scramble in aid of St Vincent De Paul takes place during the day over 15 holes.
