But what local people thought were SOS flares in the skies above Gaoth Dobhair turned out to be Chinese lanterns.
Bunbeg Coast Guard launched its vessel as part of the search operation.
Meanwhile Greencastle Coast Guard was also involved in a search at sea which ended when the missing man was found on shore.
