Shay Given attended an emotional memorial service for his former teammate Pavel Srnicek, who tragically died on December 29th – aged just 47.

Former Czech Republic international Pavel Srnicek was a huge fans favourite at Newcastle during his eight-year spell at St James’s Park.

Given was signed as competition for Srnicek by Kenny Dalglish in August 1997 – but Given dislodged Srnicek and established himself as the No.1 at the club.

The pair worked closely over the next number of seasons and grew very close during their time at the club.

Srnicek left Newcastle in 1998 and signed for Sheffield Wednesday – but his affinity with the Newcastle fans and former players never wavered.

Given was joined at the emotive memorial service at St Andrew’s Church, Newcastle by former teammates Alan Shearer and Rob Lee.

Srnicek’s brother Milan attended the memorial service and was blown away by the level of support shown towards Pavel and their family.

There was also a minute’s applause for Srnicek before Newcastle’s thrilling 3-3 draw with Manchester United at St James’s Park on Tuesday night.
