The body of a woman in her 80s has been recovered from The Quay in Donegal Town.

It followed a search and rescue operation after the woman was reported missing late last night.

A report that a woman had entered the water around 11.30pm was circulated to local Gardai.

Both Killybegs Coastguard and the Bundoran Lifeboat as well as the Rescue 118 helicopter from Sligo and the Fire Service were involved in the search.

A body was later removed from the water by the RNLI just after 1am and the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her identity has not yet been made known.

However, Gardai no not believe the death was suspicious.

The body was taken to Letterkenny University Hospital where a post mortem is expected to take place later today.
