Club news

With Open Week well underway, and with the help of some fine weather, we have had some fantastic performances throughout the week. Events got underway with the Wednesday Open Singles Stableford, sponsored by Moore’s Garage and Arnold’s Hotel. Mark Caithness was the winner with an impressive score of 42 points. Mal Johnson was second with 40 points, with Knox Wilson in third with 39 points. Niall McCormack won the gross with 31 points.

It was the turn of the ladies on Thursday the 21st with the Open singles stableford sponsored by Nora Crumlish. The winner was Cheryl Chambers with a great score of 41 points. Anna Curley was second with 40 points while Margaret O’Hare was third on 39 points. Robyn McConnell won the gross.

The Gents Singles Stableford on Friday the 22nd was sponsored by Glen FreshFoods/Starcrest Seafoods/Gary McFadden & Sons. It was nice to see Graham Cummings on top of the leaderboard again after a noticeable absence, with 41 points. In second was Mark Caithness who is obviously in great form. Mark had 40 points, his second score in the 40s within two days. Third was Billy Griffin with 39 points. Michael Wilson won the gross with a fantastic score of 36 points.

Saturday saw the staging of the 4BBB Open sponsored by Heineken/Western Beverages and the Ladies 14 hole competition sponsored by Geraldine Magee. The 4BBB was won by John McGinley and Ken Gleeson with an unbeatable score of 58 points. In second were Garry Wright and Ian Walsh with 59 points who narrowly beat the Daltons (Michael and Gerald) into third place on BOT. Mary

Wilson won the ladies competition with Lady Captain Mary Lafferty in second and Jill McCorkell in third.

Sunday’s Open Singles Stableford, sponsored by Value Centre produced some of the best scores of the week.

Junior Golf

We had a fantastic day’s golf for the Juniors on Saturday with nearly 30 young competitors gracing our fairways. It was a great spectacle to see such a large group of young enthusiasts displaying their very impressive talents.

In the Senior Boys section there was some terrific golf on display but it was James T Sweeney who emerged as the clear winner with 41 points. James followed that up with another great score of 42 points on Sunday to win the category prize in the senior competition. Well done to James who has lost a total of 6 shots in the last two weeks and now plays off a handicap of 18. Second place in the senior boys was Luke Kelly (13) with 39 points while Eoin Flanagan (21) was third on 37 points.

In the juveniles section, Hugh Burke narrowly defeated Ben Smyth. Eoin Bonar was third. In the cadets section, twins Stanley and Alfie Wilson could not be separated, finishing in a dead heat to claim joint first prize. In third place was Sean McBride.

Note that the Presidents’ Prize for juniors will take place on Wednesday the 3rd August while the Captains’ Prize will be held on the 10th August. Afternoon tee times to be confirmed.

Events for the week ahead

Please note that our open week continues throughout the week with competitions every day. Bookings can be made online or by ringing Ruth or Mary in the shop. Please tell your golfing friends and bring them along to enjoy our course and sample our food afterwards in the Vardon lounge.

Function Room for Private Parties:

We have hosted a number of private functions in the clubhouse recently and these have proved to be a great success. If you, or someone you know, is organising a private function please be aware that the clubhouse is available free of charge, with exclusive use for the occasion. So far, the feedback that we have been getting is that the golf club is the ideal venue for parties of up to one hundred people. Please make contact with Sarah if you are interested in holding a function at the clubhouse (074 91 36335)
