A drunken man went berserk at the Finn Valley Agricultural Show and randomly smashed the back windscreen of a car.
John Callaghan, aged 22, appeared at Letterkenny District Court in connection with the incident which occurred at Kilcadden Crossroads on June 25th, 2016.
Inspector Goretti Sheridan told the court the attack resulted in an estimated €1,500 of damage to the victim’s car.
“At 6.30pm, the driver of the Grey Audi had just parked his car beside the marquee, and was proceeding to take his keys out of the ignition when he seen the defendant charging at his car.
“He had a paling post in his hand and smashed the back windscreen of his car, and then proceeded to scrape the sides of the vehicle.
“He then attempted to strike the driver of the vehicle, before he was brought to the ground by a group of a males who witnesses the frenzied attack,” she revealed.
Solicitor for the defendant Frank Dorrian said there was absolutely no logic at all behind his client’s actions and said he suffered from depression.
He told the court, “My client can offer no logic as to why he did what he did, it was a act of random uncontrolled madness.
“He can offer no insight as to why he did what he did, he’s very sorry to the injured party who he doesn’t know and is not only very remorseful for what he has done, but is very embarrassed.
“He genuinely can’t figure out why he did what he did, he was extremely intoxicated at the time and wants to compensate for the damage he has caused.
“He has no previous convictions, and he suffers from depression and has been on anti-depressants for a time.”
Inspector Goretti Sheridan said she didn’t know the figure for the amount of damage caused by estimated that it was around €1,500.
Judge Paul Kelly ordered a probation report on Callaghan, of Trusk Road, Ballybofey, to be complied on and an exact estimate be given on the compensation required for the injured party.
