Number 23 for number 23: Coleman on the mark as Everton defeat Arsenal

HE WEARS the number 23 shirt – and tonight Seamus Coleman netted his 23rd career goal for Everton in a 2-1 win over Arsenal.

Coleman’s third of the season sent Everton on their way to a morale-boosting win over Arsenal at Goodison Park.

The Killybegs man netted late in the first half as the Toffees scored a 2-1 win that was their first triumph in six games.

It was only a second win in 12 for Ronald Koeman’s side and it denied Arsenal top spot on a white hot night on Merseyside.

Everton trailed to a deflected free-kick by Alexis Sánchez that deceived goalkeeper Maaren Stekelenburg.

Everton, stung by recent criticism, responded superbly and, on the stroke of half-time, Coleman equalised.

Leighton Baines’ deep cross swept invitingly across the box and Coleman, getting between Laurent Koscielny and Gabriel, headed past Petr Cech.

Coleman, in celebration, surged along the touchline, his ear-cupped, perhaps outlining the feelings of the squad to that criticism.

Coleman was also at the centre of a heated exchange as the teams parted ways at half-time.

The Republic of Ireland captain was certainly ‘up for it’ on the night and Everton secured the win late on when Ashley Williams headed home.
