A large number of sheep have perished after being driven into the sea at Lower Downings on Tuesday night.
It is believed that local dogs attacked the flock of around twenty sheep on Tuesday night and drove them into the water.
The Tirconail Tribune reports that the sheep belonged to local butcher, Manus McFadden
Eight of the carcasses were found washed ashore on Wednesday morning while another ten are still missing.
At the same time one ewe was rescued after becoming entangled in briars.
The incident has caused serious concern among the local sheep owners and dog owners are warned to keep their animals under control. Many ewes are vulnerable at this time of year and are heavily pregnant.
Anyone who might have witnessed the attack on the flock is asked to contact the Gardai at Milford urgently.
