Man who swiped €100 in unclaimed cash from ATM machine appears in court

January 9, 2017

A young man who took €100 in cash from an ATM machine after another customer had left it behind has been given the Probation Act in court.

Anthony O’Donnell, 32, appeared at Letterkenny District Court in Co Donegal charged with theft.

The court heard that another person had tried to take out the money with their card at the ATM machine at Sweeney’s Spar Service Station at Ramelton Road, Letterkenny on February 7th, 2016.

However, the money was slow in coming out of the machine and the woman walked away.

Solicitor Kieran O’Gorman said his client, of 6 Hawthorn Close, Donegal Road, Ballybofey, was merely passing by the ATM machine and saw the cash “sitting there.”

Gardai interviewed the father-of-two after viewing CCTV footage and he admitted taking the cash.

He has since paid back the €100 in cash to the injured party.
