The highest percentage of Ireland’s holiday homes are located in Donegal, according to new figures which signify the high levels of tourist activity in the county.

The latest GeoView Residential Report found that there are 11,341 holiday homes across Donegal, making up 13% of the national total.

There are now a total of 84,785 houses in Donegal as of the end of 2016, 60,886 of which are occupied full-time. Donegal has an overall low occupancy rate, with 72% of homes currently occupied all year round.

The addresses of 385 residential dwellings in Donegal were newly added to the GeoDirectory database in 2016.

In the final three months of last year, 188 residential properties in Donegal were classified as being under construction. The average property price was recorded as €113,641.

Donegal also has the second highest average ratio of dwellings per 1,000 people. There are 542 houses for every 1,000 persons.

The county is among those with the smallest average household size, with 2.61 people per household.

The report found that there is a below-average number of houses per km2 in Donegal. With 18 homes per km, there are large areas of land without properties in the county. The national average is 30 homes per kilometre.

The GeoView report gives a breakdown of residential property activity by county and is based on cross referenced data from the 2016 CSO Census of Population, the GeoDirectory Database, and the Department of Housing, Planning, Community and Local Government.
