Young Donegal actor Art Parkinson’s movie Kubo and the Two Strings has been nominated for two Oscar awards.

The announcement of the 89th Academy Award nominations this afternoon revealed that Kubo is up for awards in two categories – Best Animated Movie and Best Visual Effects.

Teen star Art Parkinson (15) who is a native of Movile, voices the lead actor in the epic animation directed by Travis Knight. Kubo and the Two Strings will compete against My Life as a Zucchini, Moana, Zootopia and The Red Turtle for the award of Best Animated Feature.

The film is also up for the award of Best Visual Effects, where it will compete against other epic adventures Deepwater Horizon, Doctor Strange, The Jungle Book, Kubo and the Two Strings, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

Kubo and the Two Strings is being noted for its quality animation, powerful performances and universal appeal. The epic tale directed by Travis Knight sees a one-eyed boy in Japan with the gift of telling fantastical stories embarking on a mystical quest to discover his family’s magical legacy.

At the age of 15, Art has already had an exciting acting career and rubbed shoulders with some of the biggest names in showbiz – including the cast of Game of Thrones and his Kubo co-stars Matthew McConaughey, Charlize Theron and Ralph Fiennes.

Art is a proud promoter of the Irish language and will act as an ambassador for Seachtain na Gaeilge 2017 alongside Letterkenny TV star Michael Carey.  Art attends school at Coláiste Chineál Eoghain in Buncrana.

Other Irish nominees for this year’s Oscars include Limerick actress Ruth Negga, who has received her first ever Academy Award nomination for her role in Loving.

Ruth will be up against Isabelle Huppert, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone and Meryl Streep for the award of Best Actress.

This year’s nominations list was topped by La La Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone. The movie musical has received 14 nominations, equalling with past classics All About Eve and Titanic for the record for most Oscar nominations.

The winners will be announced in a star-studded ceremony in Hollywood on February 26th.

Congratulations Art!
