‘McCourt and Harps aren’t right for each other’, claims ex-Harps boss Keely

Former Finn Harps manager Dermot Keely has questioned Finn Harps’ signing of Paddy McCourt.

The former Celtic ace made his Harps debut against Cork City on Friday night, playing the last 20 minutes as a substitute in the 1-0 defeat.

McCourt signed with Harps last week and his capture certainly caused a stir, but Keely – who managed Harps in the latter part of the promotion-winning season in 1995/96 – isn’t convinced.

“I can understand why Ollie Horgan might have thought it made sense to sign him but I can’t see this story having a happy ending for either party,” Keely wrote in his column in The Irish Sun today.

“Paddy made his debut as a substitute midway through the second half against Cork City on Friday on what looked like an awful pitch. Is he really going to be able to produce on that surface?

“I could see why a top club would have taken Paddy on, although Dundalk had no interest in doing so despite him training with them.

“But for a club at the bottom, which needs 11 grafters to have any chance of staying up, it looks like a marriage which hasn’t a hope of working out.”
