Donegal man ‘significantly up the chain’ in £160,000 drugs seizure, Belfast Court hears

March 3, 2017

Bail has been denied to a 29-year-old Donegal man who was before a Belfast Court in relation to a £160,000 drug seizure last month.

Two men were arrested during a significant operation in Belfast three weeks ago.

Officers recovered 3.4 kilos of cannabis and 1.5 kilos of cocaine in a vehicle.

Conrad Clarke, of Railway Road, St Johnston, was a passenger in the car stopped in the Duncrue Street area on February 8.

Clarke faces charges of importing, possessing and being concerned in the supply of Class A and B drugs.

Prosecutors claimed two men arrested during the operation three weeks ago were “significantly up the chain” of an organisation behind the plot.

Although he made no comment during interviews, the co-accused driver was said to have agreed to make a delivery to help pay off a £10,000 drug debt.

Opposing bail, prosecution counsel Philip Henry said police believe the consignment was transported from the Republic into Belfast.

“This has all the hallmarks of an organised venture and losses will have to be recouped,” he told the court.

“Police say the (two accused) are significantly up the chain and at the same level as one another.”

Michael Boyd, defending, argued that Clarke is totally unknown to police.

He told Madam Justice McBride the accused has worked in England on construction sites for seven years and was due to return to a project at Hinkley Point nuclear power station in Somerset.

In denying bail, the judge cited the risks of re-offending and flight.
