Donegal is set to experience snow and sub-zero tonight and into tomorrow (Thursday).

Met Eireann has issued a weather warning as up to 20 counties including Donegal could get up to 3cm of snow in parts.

Snow is already falling in many parts of Donegal including Buncrana, Letterkenny and Milford.

A status yellow alert for “snow-ice” comes into force from 7am on Thursday and stays in place until 6am on Friday.

The counties to be hit include Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo, Roscommon, Sligo, Cavan, Monaghan, Dublin, Kildare, Laois, Longford, Louth, Wicklow, Offaly, Westmeath, Meath, Kerry, Limerick and Tipperary.

A forecaster said: “For a time on Thursday and Thursday night, there’ll be patchy accumulations of up to 3cm of snow, especially on high ground, but small amounts at lower levels also.

“Occurring for a time in parts of Munster between 7am and 4pm and for a time in parts of Leinster, Connacht and Ulster from 4pm onwards.

“Rain will soon follow, clearing any snow.”

Tonight is to continue bitterly cold with temperatures plunging to as low as -4C in parts.

Motorists across the county are advised to take extra care as there will be a widespread sharp or severe frost and icy patches.
