Gardai are examining blood samples after a burglar was injured during an overnight break-in to a Letterkenny butcher-shop.

Gildea’s Butcher at Lower Main Street was targeted in the overnight raid.

Considerable damage was caused to the well-known premises which is run by former councillor Paddy Gildea and his son Lee.

The thief is understood to have gained access through a window in the roof and then crawled down through an attic space.

Considerable damage was caused to the shop with two tills and fittings taking the brunt of the attack.

It is not known if any cash was taken during the raid.

A Garda forensics team are at the scene.

The shop is currently closed but it is hoped to have it reopened for customers in the afternoon.
