Countdown continues to RunDonegal Women’s 5k

With just over a week to go to this year’s RunDonegal Women’s 5k, event director, Grace Boyle is asking those taking part to get registered as soon as possible.

The 2019 RunDonegal Women’s 5k will take place from the Finn Valley Sports Centre in Stranorlar on Sunday week, March 31st, at 11 am.

“The online registration is going really well this year. People can come along to the Finn Valley Sports Centre and register at any time, or they can come along and enter on the  morning of the race. We’ve organised a registration evening at the Melvin Sports Centre in Strabane for Monday between 5.30 pm and 6.30 pm,” Grace said.

For the third year, the proceeds of the annual women’s-only fundraiser will go to the Brid Carr Ovarian Cancer Research Fund. Brid, who was a native of Glencolcmille and a mother-of-three, died from ovarian cancer in 2014 aged 54.

In 2015, funds raised in her memory helped co-fund the education of a PHD student, Jennifer Quinn, at the Cork Cancer Research Centre.

“This event has grown from something very small to one of the biggest races in the local sporting calendar. A lot of people have been working hard behind the scenes to bring this year’s event together.

“Our aim when we launched the 2019 RunDonegal Women’s 5K was to secure an entry of 1,000. We know that’s a big ask, but that remains our objective,” she added.

“We are asking women of all ages to come along and take part on the day. They can walk it, jog it or race it, but the main thing is that they come along on Sunday week and become part of what is always a special and inspirational day.

“Almost 800 took part last year, and we are confident with a big push over the next week that we can reach the magical figure of 1,000. If 1,000 take part, that equals €10,000 for the chosen charity.”

The entry fee is €10 and all competitors will receive a high quality t-shirt.
