Jason Quigley weighs in for London bout, ready to kick off a new chapter

Jason Quigley has weighed in for his first fight of 2019 – and the Donegal middleweight is excited for the next chapter in his professional career.

From Chris McNulty in London

The Ballybofey man (15-0, 11KOs) meets Mathias Eklund (10-1-2, 4KOs) at the Copperbox Arena in London tomorrow evening.

Quigley will make his UK debut when he meets Finland’s Eklund.

Quigley weighed in at 11st 9lbs 5oz this afternoon in London with Eklund touching the scales at a slightly-heavier 11st 10lbs 2oz.

“I’m excited now to get back into the ring again,” said Quigley ahead of his UK debut.

“I’ve had a good training camp and I’m ready to kick off the year in London.

“I’ve never properly been to London and I’m excited to be fighting so close to home. I know there’s a big crowd traveling over from home for the fight and it’s great to be making my UK debut now.

“I’ve been very appreciative of the support so far in my pro career. I’m delighted now that many more of them will have a chance to come to see me in a fight.

“There’s a good crowd coming over and I can’t wait to see all the Irish people – and especially the ones from Donegal.

“It’s going to be a great experience.”

Eklund’s sole loss came in October, when he lost a split decision against Patrick Rokohl for the vacant WBO European super-middleweight title.

Unbeaten middleweight Quigley meets Eklund on the undercard of Charlie Edward’s maiden WBC Flyweight World title defence against Angel Moreno at London’s Copper Box Arena.

Quigley said: “I’m taking it one fight at a time. I can’t overlook any opponent.

“Mathias Eklund will be coming to win on Saturday. He’s had only one loss and has never been stopped. He’ll see this as a big chance to upset the odds. I know I have to be on my game.”
