Do you wish to see fantastic views of the Wild Atlantic Way and the Derryveigh Mountains? Are you up for a challenge and at the same time help to raise money for a very worthwhile charity?
Well now is your chance to join in a safe climb up one of Donegal’s beautiful mountains, Muckish.
The Donegal volunteers in the Irish Pilgrimage Trust are delighted to host their first ever Muckish Mountain Charity Climb.
The trust provides a holiday and respite for children and young people with intellectual disabilities, medical conditions and social needs.
The Irish Pilgrimage Trust is organising a guided climb up Muckish on Sunday, July 21 starting at 10am near Our Lady’s Shrine on the R256 Falcarragh road.
Muckish Mountain is in the Derryveagh Mountains and is 667.1 metres (2,189 ft) high, being the 163rd highest mountain in Ireland.
You must register for the climb at the registration area with a member of the Irish Pilgrimage Trust.
The cost is only €10 each.
Sponsorship cards are also available and will be most welcome. Your safety is paramount so we will be keeping an eye on the weather.
Guides will take you up and down the mountain and will be wearing high visibility clothing on the day.
The Irish Pilgrimage Trust is a registered charity which is active throughout Ireland and is celebrating its 48th anniversary this year.
Around 500 young people from the across Ireland spend a week on holiday/pilgrimage in Lourdes with the Irish Pilgrimage Trust every Easter.
As the Irish Pilgrimage Trust covers the cost of those young people selected to travel, the volunteers in the group and friends of the Trust are required to fundraise throughout the year to cover these costs.
Each group has to raise €14,500 and depend on the generosity of the public as the charity receives no grants etc. All adult volunteers pay their own fare (€675) and expenses and give up a week of their time.
The main focus of the trust is to offer children and young adults a holiday either in Lourdes or in one of their holiday centres in Ireland. Many young people from all over Donegal, Tyrone and Derry have travelled with the group during the past 40 years.
There are three groups which cater for children and young people in the Donegal area – a family group which cater for ill children under the age of 9 years, accompanied by a parent or close relative; a group that takes young people with a medical condition, a learning disability, physical disability, illness, social or emotional needs (aged 9-18 years); a group for young adults between the age of 18 and 30 years with a medical condition, disability or illness.
Your support is greatly appreciated.
What to Bring: suitable footwear, a backpack, spare socks, a light snack, bottles of water, sun cream, a hat and a walking stick. Please wear layers of clothes.
