Letterkenny University Hospital has been prevented from providing abortion services due to conscientious objections from staff.
Early-pregnancy abortion was legalised in Ireland on 1st January 2019, but as of May, Letterkenny University Hospital had not yet provided full termination of pregnancy services.
Department of Health documents obtained by TheJournal.ie showed that conscientious objection is a “significant challenge” at LUH.
Abortion was made legal in Ireland following the repeal of the eighth amendment in 2018. The majority of abortions are carried out through GP surgeries, but women who are more than 9 weeks pregnant or require surgical terminations are referred to a hospital. All hospitals provide terminations in emergency situations, when a woman’s life or health is at risk.
TheJournal.ie reveals that Sligo University Hospital also had issues with conscientious objections.
